You are viewing the most recent 20 entries February 8th, 200805:13 pm: Snow Days, Medals, PMSing, and the Amazing Disappearing Gunman
It's been an interesting fortnight. Last week I was in school for...one and a half days plus one period because of snow. And I mean snow. Snow like I havent seen since I was four and lived in Germany. Which was cool because hey, no school! Little sister and me made a Molly Weasley snowwoman plus seven small, oddly shaped Weasley snowchildren, but I spent most of my time studying for Saturday. Saturday was the Academic Decathlon competetition, which is what nerds do instead of sports. My team and I have been studying since September. I medalled in every event in my division except- ironically- essay. (Ironically I say because the last minute essays I turned in for history and English in the last couple weeks or so both received perfect scores, but such is life.) I also took highest individual scorer for county. Which means I got a shiny trophy. Only the highest quality plastic, I assure you. ;) My brother- who I manipulated into being on the team- took four golds in his division despite barely studying. Unfortunately, team only took second overall. Again. NEXT YEAR THOUGH! NEXT YEAR WE GO TO STATE!! *shakes fist* Apparently taking first as an individual means I'm invited to attend the First Annual Governor's Academic Recognition Dinner. (Or something like that; I *think* I left the invitation in the car.) So I may get to meet Ahnold the Governator, or at least get to be in the same room with him while he talks. *is amused* I am now the school's Golden Girl which means EVERY teacher and staff member knows who I am. Kinda creepy. (And what is up with my school's math teachers and giving hugs?) So, pretty pumped, but spent Monday and Tuesday in an unnacountably bitchy mood. Even after I bought shiny new book on myths of the Norse gods. In retrospect, I claim PMS. Good news Monday: the local magazine I sometimes work with/for is getting back on its feet and we're gonna try and get a new issue out. *dances* Now that Acadeca's over I'll have time to devote to it. (Said OS to the magazine people and the newspaper people and the Boys and Girl Club people and the AP teacher people and the Yes, Mom, I'll clean my room person.) Wednesday and Thursday I was sick, the stand up and feel dizzy and sleep a lot kinda sick. So I slept, watched lots of Supernatural (my new obsession), trawled the internet for writers' strike and election news (Mittens bowed out! Mittens bowed out!), and went out for Chinese food with my mom at her suggestion. Hee. Didn't sleep last night because parents forced me to go to school today and I remembered last minute (ten o'clock last minute) that I had an English essay due. And if I can't get a good flow going by at least eleven, the only thing I can do is ride things out until four and the amazing creative ability of four am-ed-ness kicks in. Which is what happened. Went to school with no sleep BECAUSE I CAN'T MISS ANY MORE SCHOOL and around second period started getting the kind of cramps that make you want to assume fetal position and whimper. Hid in my history teacher's room during homecoming basketball rally and read about Agincourt. Then, when everyone returned from rally, we discussed Teddy Roosevelt and how awesme he is/was. Class was just about wrapped up when school went into lockdown. Lockdown is basically shorthand for possibly homicidal gunman on/near campus. The lady who announced the lockdown was obviously panicked, which freaked us all out. There's never been a serious threat before. We spent half an hour huddled under our desks thinking a) we're all going to be brutally slaughtered and/or b) we're all going to be on the national news! Halfway through the ordeal my bastardly bastarding bastard son of a bastard what-28-day-cycle? period decided to start. *facepalms* Principal said there was a gunman sighted in the woods near the school only that proved to be less than true. No gunman I guess, but lady in the attendance office was apparently telling parents that there was a gunman sighted closeby and they'd shut down the school as a precaution. When I broke in and asked, "Wait- so there really was a gunman? Its not a just rumor?" attendance lady looked shifty and answered, "I don't know." Um. That sure inspires feelings of safety and confidence. Tried to get a hold of my parents but couldn't because neither of them were at home, none of the school telephones let you call a cell, and I quite possibly the only student in the school without a cell phone of my own. Hormones + No sleep + lockdown scare + not being able to talk to parents = shaky, quivery, teary mess of angst. But I made it home and now all I have to do is survive through eight when I have some phone interview about being a Student Leader in the Community. And then sleep. And make up work. Ugh. Well, that's all my big drama. I'm gonna be boring for awhile. How's the f-list doing? Current Mood: exhausted

It's 9:30 PM Sunday and my older brother is officially eighteen. He's also been accepted into college. I'm very proud and even though he'll be staying at home (the college is nearby), I feel old and scared. ... One of his friends at his party Friday looked like a giant Remus. At a Christmas party I went to Saturday, "Ron Weasley" showed up. I am clearly a geek. I am nearly done with my rs_smallgift and not sure if I like it. I also have not done my biology, math, or history homework/studying, and I have to schedule two meetings soon but have no free days until...a week from Friday. Also, I really, really want to see Golden Compass. But not all is woe. I have a check coming in the mail, most of my Christmas shopping is done, and ten minutes after posting on accio rs fics, two people found a fic I've wanted to reread since forever. Only eleven days till winter break. I'm going to go write a couple e-mails and then study for bio.
November 8th, 200709:30 pm: *headdesk*
So, is anyone out there on the f-list doing rs_small_gifts this year? (or online right now and willing to do me a favor?) I signed up for the exchange, but then realized I had to make claims on the 10th, at which time I will be living like a caveman for fun! camping and without internet access. So I need someone to claim for me. Essentially you say, "I, _______, claim (this prompt) on behalf of orngsnapdragon, since she is unavailable to do so." If there's anyone trolling the f-list right now and willing to do this for me, let me know. And I'll, um, write you a drabble. :D? Thanks. Current Mood: crappy

F-list, I've been forced decided to make a comic. With superheroes. Because it's not really a comic unless there are superheroes in it, yeah? But the thing is, I really, really suck at coming up with superhero (and supervillian) names. So, if you, dear wonderful f-list, could come up with some superhero/villian names (and powers if you want)I'd be very grateful. Please? :D? *holds out plate of cookies* Current Mood: ditzy

July 19th, 200710:05 pm: Why not sit down on this nice couch of mine...?
So, I've been in Europe for the past 5 weeks or so, and I flew into L.A. about two days ago and arrived home yesterday afternoon. And so, in yesterday's L.A. Times I learned that apparently someone has leaked Deathly Hollows on the internet. Seriously, what the fuck? What kind of crap is that? While it seems a bit harsh to wish death on this person (or persons) or even blindness, I'm thinking a proclivity towards strep throat for the rest of their life would be in order. That or they repent and work for a charity organization in, say, Africa. That's cool too. But anyway. Before tomorrow night and everyone learns everything (and am I the only one depressed that this is The End?), I want to say my theory about Why Voldemort Gave Lily Evans/Potter the Chance to Live. To wit: Voldie had an Oedipus Complex. Well, kinda, not really. But I've been thinking about since HBP, and it seems to me that Voldemort probably felt abandoned by his mother. Remember how Riddle figured it was his dad who had been a wizard? Remember how his reasoning was if his mom was a witch, she wouldn't have been so weak and died in childbirth?
And then he finds out his mom was a witch. She was magical. She could have saved herself. (Or, at least, that's what he thinks.) How's that gonna feel? It's gonna feel like she abandoned him. She didn't care enough about her own son to live for him. She didn't love him enough. He wasn't worth living for.
That's a lot of angst.
Voldemort has no problem with gratuitous killing, especially the gratuitous killing of Mudbloods. And why should he care for the feelings of his Death Eaters? Can anyone seriously believe that Snape having feelings for Lily would have convinced VD to give her a reprieve? (Which is, as far as I understand, a popular theory.) He tortures his most loyal followers, chops off their hand and such. He's not gonna spare Lily so she and Snape can possibly get it on. So those aren't the reasons he gave her a chance.
Rather in Lily and Harry, he sees a similar situation to what he figures his mom faced. The situations are somewhat inverted, I admit it. Vd's mom (whose name I unfortunately do not remember at this point in time) could either die and be at peace, or live and be forced to raise a son on her own, without her family or the man she loves. So, she died. She took, as Vd sees it, the "easy way out." Lily, on the other hand, being a Mudblood, a powerful witch, and a member of the Order has three mighty compelling reasons to be killed, can either die attempting to save her son (and most likely fail), or abandon him and live, apparently with the good will of Voldemort. Seen from the most objective viewpoint possible, the latter's going to be the more attractive, "easier" option. There was no reason for Lily to believe that Harry could possibly survive.
Both moms had the choice to abandon their son for an easier option. So, here Vd has an experiment. If Lily decides to abandon Harry, to do what's best for her rather than what's best for her child, then he's vindicated. His mom didn't leave him because there was something wrong with him, because he wasn't worth it. She abandoned him because humans are inherently weak, a mother's love isn't reason enough to attempt to save or be with your son.
But, and here's the crux of the matter, I think Vd's mom had no choice but to die. She was destitute. She was homeless. The man she loved had cruelly rejected her. She wasn't in good shape, probably exhausted, and she probably wasn't even that good of a witch. Childbirth is, as far as I understand it, not easy. Without using her magic, both her and her son would die. Using what magic she had left, she could either use it to save her own life, or that of her son's. She chose Tom's life. Both Vd's mom and Lily died to save their son's life. Another way Harry and Voldemort are connected, are similar. And this way, I think, is going to be the most important of them all, and an important plot point in the final book.
I just don't know how.
And, on a side note, I think had Voldemort decided to attack the Longbottoms, there would have been the same result. Alice would sacrifice herself for her son. And I'm not saying that because my version of Alice would do it, but because any decent mother would.

1977: Auld Lang Syne
Summary: It's 1977, and the first war is about to begin. The Order is founded. The Death Eaters are recruiting. The Marauders are graduating. People fall in love. People marry. People die. Everyone has a story to tell. Remus/Sirius. Alice/Frank. James/Lily Rating: PG-13 Words:8,589 A/N: This is a very ambitious project, and I'm not sure if I'm off to a good start. While the emphasis is going to be on the Marauders, Lily, and Alice & Frank, a lot of other characters will be given their own stories and parts. I am playing around with characterization some, so bear with me if you don't feel like someone is acting in a strictly canon (or more probably, fanon) way. Hope you enjoy reading this. May 8th, 200710:53 pm: Fic?
No, I don't have fic. Well, I do. I just need to finish editting. But, um, heads up. I have written something. I do live. It is over 9,000 words long (pared down) and is just the prologue. It is the prologue to what is plotted to be an over 100 part fic. I am just slightly masochistic. So, expect it soon. Damn. I need a title. Oh, I'm sixteen now. w00t! I have other fics and things I've been working on as well. But this is the only thing within a couple days of being put up. Current Mood: tired

Hello pretties,
Pretty good day today, first Academic Decathlon meeting. Dad just found out he passed his test to get his master's in poli-sci and Older Brother found out he was accepted into AP American History. (My family breeds geeks.) My feet hurt though, which is why I shouldn't wear high heeled boots even if they are stylish and sexy and all my friends call them hooker boots. Also, I was the only person in History to know that Prague was the capital of the Czech Republic.
Group work sucks. Now here's my shamefully short fic for this months magic_carrousel. I want to say you should expect Remus/Sirius soon, but I completely scrapped my last idea for amutualslurping and am only a bit through new idea.
(I don't expect anyone to like this, but I had to write it.)
Title: Little Kingdoms Rating: PG Pairings/Characters: James/Lily at first, then Harry gen fic type thing. More Frank/Alice fic, written for love_lingers challenge. Shall be crossposted. Enjoy. There'll be at least two more fics posted this week, both oneshots, one Remus/Sirius and the other kinda James/Lily but mostly gen. Both for challenges.
Title: By Any Other Name Rating:PG Summary:James and Lily can't help but view Frank and Alice's relationship through the lenses of their own. Art. It's not very good, but I'm posting mostly to keep love_lingers, your lj community for everything Frank and Alice, alive. Plus, I got a new scanner. And man, does that thing pick up on everything. Sorry for the smudges and the general crappiness. So: Frank/Alice and then one of Lupin.

August 13th, 200605:23 pm:
School starts in ten days and I have finally, finally, finished all my school-mandated summer reading. Though, I would have finished sooner if hadn't lost one of the books. Hee. Now all that remains to be done is my essay for Honors Eng.,("In a well-written essay, identify and explain the "spiritual reassessment or moral reconciliation which Scout Finch, Antonio Marez, and Guy Montag experience by each novel's end."), and my speech for aca-deca which I'll probably just base off something I've already written and have lying around. Considering all this, there probably won't be a lot of fic being put up. But we'll see. There are things half written and plot bunnies plotted out, so if I'm diligent I might post some stuff before I am once again forced into the hallowed halls of learning. Sophomore year-I am a clever fool! Wish me luck. :P Things to Do: 1-article 2-essay 3-speech 4-McG fic 5-R/S Marauders fic 6-JPLE fic And for your amusement (as it amused me greatly), apparently there is a book out there called "Mapping the World of Harry Potter" wherein several paid-professionals wrote essays about our beloved boy wizard and his world. Here's an excerpt from a review on the book (Via Amazon.com):
“Of course, not all the essays have such serious subject matter. The most enjoyable essay is one that is certainly not intended for children: Joyce Millman's "To Sir, With Love." It's a hilarious and slightly disturbing essay about the proliferation of Snape fan-fiction on the Internet, in which Snape gets up to various S&M activities with several other Harry Potter regulars. The other humorous essays are more innocent, including Mercedes Lackey's description of her own "Harry Potter" drinking game and why Harry is going to need some serious therapy if he survives."
This is clearly the stuff of brilliance. Has anyone actually read it?
But seriously, if they’re writing essays about fan fiction, then someone needs to address slash. Or maybe the fan community in general. But mostly just slash. Of the Remus/Sirius variety.
Yeaaah.

August 8th, 200601:59 am: In which there is fic.
(Note- If you are not of the slashy persuasuion and are here for the Alice/Frank, skip this part- it's all slashy raving.)So, secret confession time. I am quite horribly addicted to Shakespeare. And just Shakespeare- Shakespeare slash. And not just and Shakespeare slash- Benvolio/Mercutio slash. (You know- Romeo's cousin and his best friend from Romeo and Juliet?) It is, in my opinion, like Remus/Sirius except set in Italy.
With swords. And the word "dost." Dost!
Unfortunately, it is an extremely small, small, small fandom and I am doomed to wander this Earth looking for quality Benvolio/Mercution slash that doesn't exist. Heck, I'd take bad fic. So, please, is there anyone, anyone, out there who knows where I could get a hit? I've already searched interests and found only one small dried up community with a couple of fics I've already read.
However, my addiction for this particular pairing raises a large question: Why are all my slash pairings all doomed? I mean, Siriusly.
Pimping time: go read bmbridges . Right now. Really. It's brilliant. It's a Marauders AU set in the present day with no magic at an extremely religious prep school. Lily/James, Sirius/Remus, Lucius/Narcissa. It's NC-17, but I think that's a bit high- there's nothing too bad about it. Anyway, don't be skeptical. It is fantastic and should be right up there with SBP. I am serious. Go read. You. Now.
And without further do, the Alice/Frank fic for magic_carrousel . This, I believe, proves why I should never write romance as I am a horrible, horrible sap and please ignore part 5 as it is sickeningly sweet.
Part 4, however, isn't bad. IMHO.
Title: World Without End Pairing: Alice/Frank Longbottom Rating: Teen/PG-13 Warnings: Alcohol, cursing, extremely weak and non explicit sex. Summary: The Romance of Frank and Alice Longbottom in Five Parts. From Hogwarts, to the first war, to afterwards. Prompts: 9, 16, 15, 2, 18 Parts: 5
